The Pretender - Press Release

Danny Boyle's first feature, Shallow Grave, was made in 1994 on a budget of roughly £1 million, a fraction of most studio films even at the time, with a cast of largely unknown actors, including a then-unknown Ewan McGregor. It set the template for almost everything that followed: kinetic, visually inventive, wildly resourceful filmmaking, produced by people who treated a modest budget as a design constraint rather than a limitation.

Bigelow's characters rarely get a clean ending, because most people, under real pressure, don't get one either. That honesty is difficult to sit with. It's also the reason her films have stayed with people well past the length of their runtime.

Scorsese didn't invent the morally complicated protagonist. But few filmmakers have spent as long, or dug as deep, making the case that flawed and false are not the same thing, and that an audience will follow a character through almost anything, as long as what they're watching is honest.
